Tudor House, Weymouth

Open the front door of the Tudor House when it was built some 450 years ago, and you would nearly step into an inlet of Weymouth Harbour. The house almost certainly belonged to a wealthy merchant who had warehouses nearby and used it as home and office. The water would have been fairly stagnant and would have stunk in warm weather – so much so that the harbour inlet was eventually filled in and the water is now 100 yards away.

There is intriguing evidence of how the house has been altered over the years, but the basic Tudor structure remains. Restoration has been sympathetically done, and furniture and objects have been added to re-create the domestic life of the period.
