Stockwood church

Roughly the size of the lower deck of a bus – about nine metres by four metres – Stockwood church is the smallest in Dorset. That is not its only claim to fame: the dedication to St Edwold is unique. Most of the church is about 700 years old. It was declared redundant in 1959, but services are still held on 29 August (St Edwold’s day) and before Christmas.

Sometimes spelt Eadwold, the saint was the brother of King Edmund of East Anglia. When his brother was killed, Edwold declined the throne and lived as a hermit near Cerne Abbas, performing many miracles. An unlikely theory about the Cerne Giant is that it is Edwold, pointing the way to Cerne Abbey.
