Still falling, Portland

Still falling, Portland

Once there were over a hundred working quarries on the Isle of Portland. Today the number is in single figures. Tout Quarry was one of the casualties, the last stone being taken from there in 1982, but it lives on as a sculpture park run by the Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust. Its 42 acres are a mixture of an art gallery, a studio, a school of sculpture and a nature reserve.

The most famous work in the park is ‘Still falling’, carved into the rock face by Antony Gormley, perhaps Britain’s best-known living sculptor. It is a powerful evocation of time, depicting a man falling headlong through the layers of rock that were laid down over millions of years.
