Eggardon Hill

Eggardon is an Iron Age hillfort with three banks and two ditches enclosing most of its twenty acres. That factual description does not convey the varied beauty and haunting atmosphere of the hill. Each approach, from the four points of the compass, is completely different. From the top, the views in every direction are spectacular. One of the most perceptive writers about Dorset, Monica Hutchings, said, ‘If I had to show a visitor what Dorset country is really like in a limited time, I should bring him up here’.

Inside the fort are humps and hollows, including two Bronze Age barrows. One of the humps was reputedly planted with trees by a local smuggler as a seamark for his ships.
