Corfe Castle station
A country station on a summer’s day with a steam train puffing in. It’s hard to imagine a better place to be. And Corfe Castle sums up all that is best about a country station.
It is one of five stations on the Swanage Railway. The Swanage branch opened in 1886 and closed to passenger traffic in 1972. British Rail took up the rails, but a determined group of volunteers started to re-lay them, inching their way from Swanage to join the surviving freight line at Furzebrook. The railway is still largely run by volunteers.
At Corfe Castle, a new signal box was opened in 2012, but otherwise the station is much as it would have been in the 1950s.
